Throw a stone in the water and see the ripples emerging. Can you guess where they would end?

Wayne is the boy who does not have a decent background. But Philip and Stevie, his friends are there for him, despite the obstacles they face from time to time. But their world turns upside down when Stevie gets killed by Wayne’s brother, Tyrone. As it is supposed to be, Tyrone is taken to the jail. Dark memories are buried deep as the years pass. Now, Philip is a reporter for a local newspaper and Wayne works in a factory. He has even got a girlfriend, Tina Oldfield.

Things get out of control when Tina’s father, Mr. Oldfield, gets attacked by an unknown person. While police suspects Wayne on the attack, Philip faces a series of strange events which lead him to secrets he never expected to exist.

Waves Break (on Unknown Shores) by Barry Litherland is written from a first-person narrative form, using Philip as the narrator. Of all characters, no one could have done the narrating better than Philip, especially being a news reporter. Therefore, a big chunk of plus points goes for the author’s fine selection on the narrator.

I loved the author’s simple writing style, which aided me to dive into the story more easily. And I must say, being simple did not make it just a ‘simple story.’ It certainly had the vibe which would keep the reader attached to the story. Not only that, I enormously enjoyed his sense of humor, which was more than enough to make me laugh in most unexpected moments. The flow of the story was nice and fast pacing, making it an exciting read.

There was nothing I disliked about this book, except for one place where Lord Buddha’s name had been used as a simile to describe a thug’s posture. I found it a bit offensive, but that was not a reason to deduct a star. With minimal grammar errors and typos, the novel was a satisfying read. Therefore, I rate this novel 4 out of 4 stars.

This exciting fiction was a mind magnet which kept my eyes glued for the whole time. It was thrilling to go back and forth in time with Philip to solve complicated puzzles and to reveal the darkest secrets buried deep in the sands of time. I highly recommend this novel for anyone who loves a fast-paced mystery. But if you are sensitive to violence and crime, I suggest you to pass on this one.
