[Following is a volunteer review of "We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies" by Matthew Tysz.]
‘We Are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies’ is the first book in the series of nine planned books being written by Matthew Tysz. This book plays the role of a perfect opening that explains the world of Voulhire while setting up some very interesting characters on their journey.
A powerful mage and the Lord of Hillport, Meldorath is feared by the whole nation of Voulhire and as the book opens we see him getting arrested for a mysterious purpose. While his survival after his arrest is repeatedly questioned throughout the story we see his past actions haunt the villagers of this little town. King Wilhelm sends a close friend of his to replace Meldorath and uncover the truths hidden in Hillport. This sets up a chain reaction leading to a violent end. At the same time, a young Galen Bray escapes his warring homestead only to find himself to have inherited massive sums of gold in Voulhire. His search for purpose of his life begins. But his fate has a different story to tell.
Tysz is so good with setting up the fictional world of Voulhire that he almost makes the reader believe that they have a part to play in it. The politics is very realistic which has a system to select the King. There is a religion and there are massive places of worship that harbour knowledge and inspire the youth of Voulhire to practice patience and virtue. But what I feel to be the most beautiful part of Voulhire’s world is its grounded magic. The author has put such an effort into it that this magic achieves the standard of modern science with everything being tested and experimented before being used. The magic is divided into categories and has a deeper connection with another world. The author gives beautiful visual descriptions of all the magical events along with all the action in the vicinity.
Other than a couple of mistakes in the editing in the PDF format of the book, I didn’t find anything that would turn a reader off while reading. Therefore I must rate We Are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies 4 out of 4 stars.
Although I have read only the first installation of this series I had a great time being a part of Voulhire. I would definitely recommend any adult person who enjoys reading fantasy novels to give this novel a read.
