[Following is a volunteer review of "We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies" by Matthew Tysz.]
Matthew Tysz’s book We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies is a fantasy book with interesting twists. The book depicts a place of many wonderments and dangers; a place of pleasure and pain; a place of ordinary and extraordinary men; a place of magic and this place is: Voulhire. A boy by the name of Galen sets out on a mission to fulfill the wishes of his dead relative that he knows nothing about and as he delves into this other world far away from the land he calls home (the land of the Princes), he is up for many surprises.
In Voulhire, a man who helped in delivering a message from his estranged uncle informing him of his inheritance, an executor, acts as Galen’s guide when he arrives and tells him all about the kind of work his uncle was into. Though he helps Galen, he seems to be running away from something or someone (perhaps his past). Soon Galen is to take over the business but is not sure if he is ready. The executor helps him to understand this new land and also his uncle’s craft, to know the secrets of it, to know why Voulhire is a place of such astonishment.
The book shows how the human mind can achieve feats beyond the imaginable and how that can be used to do and influence others to do diabolical things. It also shows how certain events in the lives of beings no matter how vile must be dealt with, instead of being hidden since the truth eventually comes out.
Matthew Tysz’s book is filled with adventure, the spirit of togetherness, betrayal, and turpitude. The book is the first one to the sequel of three has a plot that I loved. I am therefore looking forward to reading the other books in the series in order to answer the many questions lingering in my mind. I also loved the diction and the overall style of writing that Mathew used.
I didn’t find any negative aspects about the book. But I will mention that the book has some horrific scenes that may shock the audience.
I recommend this book to people aged sixteen and above due to the language used (which in my opinion is mature) and the type of imagery presented in certain scenes which may not be suitable for young kids. Also, due to the nature of horror shown in certain scenes of the book, which is not ill-intentioned, comes to me as unfit for the younger generation.
The book is well written and professionally edited and therefore I give it four out of four stars. I loved it!
