Review of Strong Heart
Who do you count on when you are suddenly orphaned at the tender age of 13? Strong Heart by Charlie Sheldon is the first edition in the Strong Heart series. The name of the book describes the strength of the character Sarah who is suddenly orphaned and is left at the doorstep of her outlandish grandfather Tom, who is forced to take Sarah along with him on a camping trip to the resting place of his grandfather in the Olympic Peninsula. What starts as a boring camping trip soon turns into an unforgettable journey for Sarah, Tom, William and Myra. You get the mesmerizing wilderness and beauty of the Olympic Peninsula illustratively described in this book which has all the thrilling, adventurous feel to it.
Although I thought this book was the story of an orphaned teenage girl at the beginning, I soon got to know that it is not so for the book covers much more intense subjects like the origin of the people in the Olympic Peninsula, their survival as well as environmental aspects. This book hits home as recently we saw the remains of 215 indigenous children discovered from a Boarding School near Kamloops, British Columbia and in the story, William recollects being sent to such a school during his childhood. We can discern that the author is thorough in his research and has profound knowledge of the subject. The description of the mountains and nature is so vivid and eloquent that we will be drawn to read more on it. I also liked how the author takes time to explain certain tasks in camping which some might think as mundane but sets up a wonderful backdrop for the plot.
I was impressed with how detailed the author was with the climate, the camping experience, the geography of the trail and the archaeological aspects. There were some light-hearted moments, moments of friendship and some familial love which is relatable to normal readers.
The only issue I had with the book is that I was disappointed with the ending and I kept wishing for a more polished one.
I would be elated to give this book a 4 out of 4 stars as it takes us through a journey of love, friendship and loyalty above all. There are many characters in this book who are passionate about various things may it be responsibility towards one's family or tribe or one’s job. The book also seemed to be professionally edited with only a handful of errors.
I would suggest this book to all the adventure-loving readers who share a passion for nature and ancient legends.
