J.R.R.R.(Jim) Hardison in Fish Wielder weaves a tale as silly as, well, what silly means. It is a story of Thoral, the mighty fist wielder, who later, at a dramatic moment in the book, becomes Thoral the fish wielder, hence the name of the book. He has to save the world of gnome from the heartless one, the leader of the evil religion and the Dark Lord by protecting and not letting them consume the chocolate pudding infused with magical power that would enable them to rule the world. Helping him on this journey are his faithful friends Brad, the talking koi fish, that can breathe on earth but drowns in water, and his tiger-striped horse, Warlordhorse, the last lord of Brendylschmylyn. The three set off on an adventure to find trouble, and trouble they find. They get embroiled in misadventures while searching for the headquarters of the evil religion along with the elf king, Elford, and his daughter, Nalweegie, the Evening Snack. The book also has a sweet little romantic track between Thoral and the princess.

This story is nothing but a wild ride in the world created by the author. It is a fantastical, illogical but intriguing journey of his imagination with loving, charming characters like the flying squirrel, Tyncie CheeChaw CheeChee WeeWaw. The story doesn’t stand still even for a second and is fast-paced. The action sequences are brutal and full of gore. They are so vividly described that you can’t help but flinch at places. You get repulsed but still get entertained by them. The biggest asset of the book the writing style. You need immense talent to write a book in such a simplistic language and not make it seem like a hack job. Each element in the book is freshly thought out and unlike the world, we live in. Even the villains who feel larger than life bring with them silliness, goofiness, and humor. A little bit of science gets entangled with this magical world towards the end which adds another dimension to the book.

My only issue with the book is the cliffhanger. I get it is the first book in the series but I prefer some kind of conflict resolution towards the end or at least a part of it. I hate it when a book stops right in the middle of a climax. Each book in itself should be complete with a cliffhanger that lays the premise for the next keeping the reader intrigued and hooked.

Having said that I give the book a stellar 4 out of 4 stars. Young adults who enjoy gore and violence with a mix of fantasy will love this book. I wouldn’t mind watching an animated movie or series based on this.
