[Following is a volunteer review of "Awakening" by Tayma Tameem.]
What if you woke up one day and didn't know who you are or where you are? Katja found herself in this exact predicament. She woke up in a forest with all her memories missing. Awakening: Book 1 by Tayma Tameem is a thrilling fantasy that surrounds the lives of two princesses. Princess Katja, the older of the two, is caring, affectionate and sweet. She dedicates most of her time to taking care of her younger sister, Princess Amara, and tries her best to keep her out of trouble. Princess Amara, on the other hand, is a very peculiar child. She was born with a special power that allows her to conjure and manipulate ice. She also has anger issues and her powers get so out of control sometimes that it put the lives of people around her in danger. This caused most persons in the kingdom to fear her. Through constant training and monitoring, Princess Amara gains some control over her powers and tries to become a better person.
Awakening: Book 1 is a very vibrant story filled with engrossing imagery. The author describes each scene down to the most minuscule detail. One positive aspect of this story is the way that the characters are developed. We get a sense of empathy toward each character as we grow and develop with them. The book is written with occurrences in the past as well as the present. The author made sure to place markers at the beginning of each chapter so the reader is notified of each time frame. I absolutely love the plot twists and the shocking moments that this story contains. I didn't find a single mundane moment throughout the story.
Although the entire book is an amazing read, I didn't particularly like or understand the ending. It left me with unanswered questions. I'm still trying to figure out how Katja got to the forest and how her memories got erased. I also still don't understand what happened to some of the other characters. Since this is book one, maybe these questions will me answered in the following books in the series.
Awakening: Book 1 is no doubt a 4 out of 4 stars read. The book seemed to be professionally edited and has a very immersive and exciting plot. I liked the idea of sibling love that the author portrays. It is quite refreshing.
I highly recommend this book to fantasy lovers. If you like a story that keeps you guessing, then this is definitely the book for you. It is filled with suspense and nail-biting scenes that are guaranteed to keep you hooked. I would not recommend this book to a younger audience as there are graphic death scenes toward the ending of the book.
