Review of Duplicity

[Following is a volunteer review of "Duplicity" by Fin C Gray.]
Duplicity by Fin C Gray is a complex, immersive thriller. The book centers around two main characters. Tom is the father who is always yearning for a better life. He resents his wife and children thinking they are the cause of his unhappiness. This leads him to a life of cheating and alcohol abuse. He doesn't learn to appreciate his family until he starts losing them slowly. The other main character, Daniel, is Tom's son. He has been through many traumatic events in his life which sent him spiralling into a life of hatred toward his father. In the intriguing prologue of the story, we are introduced to Daniel as he is about to make a big decision in his life. Wanting to end his suffering, he decides to bomb a train station during the rush hour.
Gray uses this novel to show how a broken family can influence the choices one makes in life. I liked the writing style and how the story flowed smoothly. The characters are so polished that you will want to hate them but just can't help but love them. One positive aspect of the story is the way Gray presents Daniel to us. We know terrorism is morally wrong, but we cant help but accept it and feel empathy toward Daniel. We get to understand why he is executing this gruesome act and the factors that drove him to be so self-centered. While reading, I found myself hoping that he finds the happiness that he seeks even though the avenue he took to achieve this is not a positive one.
The author kept me engaged throughout the entire plot, and I couldn't find anything I disliked about the book. It is worth mentioning that the book contains numerous amounts of violent acts, unreserved sex scenes and even cruelty to animals. This might be a turn off for some people but I think it adds to the authenticity of the story.
I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars. It is well written, professionally edited and rouses so much emotion in the reader that it is hard to put down. I commend the author on the way he writes the book using flashbacks, the present as well as the future. It adds to the suspense of the story.
If you love an intense, gripping thriller then this is the book for you. I would recommend this book to a more mature audience and persons who are not easily triggered by descriptive traumatic events. The imagery in this book can be quite vivid, and the author does not hold back on his strong use of profane language. This book has to be read with an open mind.
