Tinman by Karen Black and Matt Walton is a murder mystery that has adventure and romance woven in. It’s exciting, fast-paced, and engaging as the reader joins Gregory McGregor in putting clues together to solve the murder of his good friend, Charley Farnsworth. While being a mystery, romance, and adventure book, Karen Black also explores the subject of environmental consciousness. Gregory has to question his every move and decide who he should and should not trust on this wild and unexpected odyssey.

This story is intriguing, interesting, and kept me wanting to turn the page. Set in St. Paul, Minnesota, Gregory McGregor is moving on from his recent divorce the best he can. He receives a call from his good friend Charley Farnsworth and is offered a job that sends his world into a tailspin. He sets out on a trip to meet with Charley and is instead witness to Charley’s murder. Gregory, taking matters into his own hands, embarks on a journey all around the United States to find out who killed Charley, why, and is he next? On his first stop he encounters Corky Gonzales, another of Charley’s good friends, who lives in Charley’s Aspen, Colorado condo. She makes quite an impression on Gregory and they swiftly become allies on the dangerous journey of bringing the murderer, or murderers, to justice. The further they dig, the more they uncover and the more they wonder, did they really know their friend Charley?

I enjoyed the mystery and adventure of Tinman. The danger they both find themselves in feels real and at times, stressful. The environmental storyline was different and a layer of the book that I appreciated. It added a complication that was not expected! There isn’t too much I find negative about this book except that sometimes the romance feels forced and perhaps unnecessary. It feels like the danger and stress of the events taking place would have taken priority but then there is a seductive distraction. However, it provides another element of character development and raises the stakes since the character’s hearts become involved.

I rate Tinman 3 out of 4 stars. There are a handful of typographical errors but the book has fast moving, strong action and mystery aspects. The author does a great job of character development making it easy to get wrapped up in the story.

I recommend this book to adults who enjoy mystery/adventure and romance books. There is some adult language and love scenes interspersed with violence. This book provides a quick, intriguing, roller coaster of a read!

The environmental issues in this book were a welcome surprise to me! I did not expect it but it was important to the plot line and made for a layered read!

I have read and reviewed another book from Karen Black and I think she’s an amazing author! Just seeing her name on the cover of this book is a reason strong enough for me to read this book. The pace of this book seems to be fast and it is full of action and mystery. I wonder whoever murdered Charley and why?
