Review of Kalayla
Kalayla by Jeannie Nicholas is a family-oriented novel. The story revolves around Kalayla and the three lonely people who will change her outlook on life. Their differences will touch each other’s existence. Kalayla is a child who is sometimes being hated for her vulgarity. But still, there is braveness inside her that prevails because of the love of her mother, Maureen. She is fighting the loneliness, due to the sudden death of Kalayla’s father at an early age. While raising her far from her own family and being an outcast from her husband’s parents. Lena, on the other hand, their landlady, always wearing black, lost because of the death of her twin sons and distort two sons. Their strongest bond will occur when Kalayla learns the biggest truth about her mother. A lie that lingers for a longer year will thrive to wreck their family.
Nicholas’s story will touch your heart. It illustrates love, friendship, forgiveness, and deliverance. The book also talks about color and race, equality, sexuality, and marital abuse. I like how even the story didn’t much focus on the said issues; it gives a special spot in the book. The plot of the novel is simple but somehow it gives an impact on my life.
While the novel has such outstanding points, I amass some negative aspects regarding the book. At first, I was confused by the name being shown in every part of their point-of-view, but in a while, I understand it. I think the sudden cut of a word is not appropriate in some sentences. The words being reduced are not good to be read by.
I rated the book, 3 out of 4 stars. The stars I have given are affected by what I have said above when it comes to my concerns. There are some nominal editing issues. Overall, I praise Nicholas for her first novel and hope it is not the last. Every good story counts and I hope she continues her legacy in writing. Every bad and fair critic will help us grow in our chosen crafts.
I generally recommended the book to everyone. It holds some aspects that will teach us naturally to cherish every moment. No matter what happens, there’s always someone out there, biological family or not, who will lend their ears to listen to our sympathy and thoughts. The happiest moments or toughest times, it will pass but will be a great memory.
