Review of No Dark Clouds
This book, No Dark Clouds, is a well-researched story that tells about the experiences of a group of beggar children in Jerusalem during the time Jesus walked on earth. It focuses particularly on one courageous young boy who becomes more and more determined to meet Jesus because he has an impassioned request to make.
The author, R.W. Nelson has woven into the novel true biblical accounts of the ministry of Jesus, his crucifixion, and resurrection. He relates the effect Jesus had on various characters, some of them being Roman soldiers, the notorious zealot Barabbas, and Pontius Pilate's wife Portia.
The historical background to life in Jerusalem during Roman rule is thoroughly covered, as is the rising outrage of the Pharisees and Sadducees at Jesus's ministry and pronouncements.
What I enjoyed in this book is the interesting and well-written information on the customs of the Jewish people as well as the coverage of varying attitudes certain Roman legionaries had towards Jesus. It is also edifying to read the way Pontius Pilate might have been thinking during the trial of Jesus and after His death, when he says to the Pharisees that Jesus must have been an extraordinary person. He goes on to comment on how they were filled with jealousy while He was alive and after His death they are afraid of Him.
Study guides and scripture references provide a great opportunity for the serious reader to increase their knowledge of the Bible and Jesus's ministry. Life lesson themes with a scriptural basis are also helpful. It would be a good idea to have a Bible at hand during the reading of this book to enhance one's reading experience.
The beginning of the book was confusing in that a string of characters was introduced without any basis for identifying their significance which only developed as the story unfolded. What the writer intended to have been poignant was not effective.
I rate this book 2 out of 4 starsbecause it is peppered with typos, spelling mistakes, grammatical errors such as the changing of tenses within a sentence or concept, and occasional confusion in the choice of vocabulary. There are also several formatting errors. It would be of benefit for this book to be properly edited and published.
I would recommend this novel to anyone who would like to learn of Jesus's ministry in an easy to read form. It is also good for those who wish to study the scriptures about Jesus's life and the miracles he performed. The controversy relating to the empty tomb after Jesus rose is well covered. For those interested in historical events it would add to their knowledge of life in
Jerusalem under Roman rule and the consequent difficulties the Jewish people had. It is suitable for young readers as well.
