Rise of the Savior: Acolyte of Truth by Antoine Bonner is a book about a seemingly normal girl named Amanda who lives a seemingly normal life until it is turned upside down when she discovers she is the Acolyte of truth. Her quest is simple, to stop Jamie, the acolyte of death who will do anything to save his dying son. While doing this she needs to protect her family and understand and master her powers, before Jamie sends the world into chaos.
The story is interesting, the world in which the world takes place is well explained and the characters and their personalities are also nicely detailed. The reader reads from a third-person perspective and the scenes change as the reader follows each character. I feel like the book takes a lot of inspiration from Greek mythology because Acolytes are like heroes in the Greek stories and Deities are like the Greek gods and each deity represents a certain thing just like the gods in Greek mythology. The end of the story also leaves room for a sequel which I like.
However, the book has some problems. The first and biggest issue is that the start of the book is slow and the part where Amanda discovers her powers towards the middle of the book even though the world where the story takes place is explained earlier which leaves a large gap in between. The writing is also a bit hard to read at certain points during the story. The story also has a few writing errors most of them being grammar errors but they don’t affect the reader's experience significantly . The writing style is also slower than it needed to be at the end. The story also doesn’t make you think “What’s going to happen next “a lot, especially during the gap between the start and the end.
I think you will like the book if you like books on Greek mythology, books with a lot of characters, books with a female lead and if you like fiction. I should also note that the book is probably not suitable for younger readers because it has some strong language.
I rate the book 3 out of 4 stars because the story and the concept are good but the execution is lacking, I would have given it a higher rating if it weren’t for the slow writing between the star and middle and towards the end.
Thanks for reading.
