Brian Kaufman has written an incredible story that covers many years and much hardship. Dread Tribunal of Last Resort starts prior to the Civil War and takes us into the lives of Decker Brown, Paula Crane, and Whitaker Hill. Decker wishes to marry Paula and right when all seems good for Decker to do so- the war starts. Paula is left behind while Decker goes off to war, and not for the side she wants him to fight on. He builds illuminations (rockets) and hopes to be able to use them on the battlefield or at least assist with his knowledge of such things. Not only does the reader get to see the trenches of the war but also the home life from Paula Crane's perspective. Whitaker Hill is also vying for Paula's affections and this character adds a very realistic side of life in the 1860s. From 1861 to after the war this book gives you insight to what life was like for those that lived during those monumental years.

I really enjoyed this book as it ended up being a lot more interesting than I originally expected. The historical aspects of the Civil War were written in a way that made it interesting to read. I had never heard of rockets during this time in history so I enjoyed that tidbit of information.

There is some great humor and romance within the pages of this book along with pain and suffering. I loved how the author shows how difficult it would be to fight in such a war. They fought against neighbor and family and people whom they didn't want to be their enemy but were. It is a great story to remind us what really matters in life.

There were some slower moments for me that I didn't understand. For me much of this was simply because of war and tactical information along with building of the rockets. The story line got more intriguing and kept me engaged through the rest of the book.

I rate this book 3 out of 4 stars due to a couple of slower moments in the book. Otherwise this book was very well written and I would recommend to others.

This is a great book for those who love history or want to learn more on the Civil War. I also recommend to those who are looking for a fresh perspective on history as this story has a more unique point of view.
