Review of Heroes of Atlantis
Roeg is a young blue haired boy fighting to find his path within his clan. Knowing he isn't blood from anyone in this clan, Roeg is tormented and humiliated by the whole clan. As Roeg the Firehold’r fights to prove himself worthy of going on the great hunt, his two best friends Ookum and Tsisa conjure up a plan to help him win over their father. Krukk, Ookum, Tsisa’s father and Roeg’s biggest bully, decide to let Roeg go with alternate motives then having him help them hunt meat for the rainy season. With the story progressing Roeg soon finds out his powerful fire stone isn't just a necklace but also gives him power. Unfortunate events happen which lead to Krukk becoming greatful to have Roeg come to the rescue with his stone helping and proving his worth to the clan.
Now the book, Hero of Atlantis: Legend of the Dragon Runes by Ryan Carriere isn’t in just the point of view of Roeg. The story jumps from Roeg the Firehold’r to Sephonei the new recruit to the rune hunters.
Sephonei was a merchant's daughter taken from her home to train for three days then got thrown to the rune hunters. As Sephonei tries to figure out what a rune even is, she is forced to go into dangerous terrain to recover a rune requested by the rune hunter's leader. There to help her and train her is Abil, a one-eyed cruel man, and Ku-aya, a ferocious woman with a battle scar all the way down her face. Sephonei goes through difficult tasks forced upon her. Just trying to survive Sephonei slowly learns battle and proves her worth. Throughout the story she learns that she now has a rune that seems useless. Then a time comes where she needs to think fast to save the lives of many crewmen, as well as her two new teammates.
This book had many good qualities, it was fast paced and did a good job of changing characters without making it seem unorganized or hard to follow. As the story progressed it became more interesting. I found myself enjoying Roeg’s loyalty and determination to his clan and self as well as his dedication and love for his friends. I also realized that I was also intrigued as to what the rune hunters would succeed in or if Sephonei would fail like the other hunter recruits.
The only negatives I have are that I wish it wasn’t such a short book. I realize that the author purposely made it into two different books but I felt a lot of information about Sephonei’s side of the story was too vague and left me not as interested in her side of the story. Also, with the way her side of the book ended felt too open. There should have been a section in the book to get me more hooked to want to read more into to adventure part of the story. Then Roeg’s part of the book had ended with me knowing he was about to go embark on another great adventure.
The book, Hero of Atlantis: Legend of the Dragon Runes is an exceptionally well edited book with no errors in grammar. I am rating this book, a three out of four stars, because it is a very good book but just not something that I couldn’t put down. Hero of Atlantis: Legend of the Dragon Runes is full of action, friendship, and hardships that every great series needs to be successful. If you are a young adult who loves fantasy creatures, battles, and adventures then this is the next series for you. I look forward to seeing what that next adventure they have brings.
