A first day at work is always something new employees, like Diana Miranda, look forward to. Despite the hazardous nature of working at a chemical plant, no one anticipates a first day’s major events to include an accident involving the sudden combustion of a co-worker during a safety drill. After spending four years in the military on tours as a paramedic and witnessing ghastly deaths and injuries, Diana is still confounded by this event. This is definitely not how she anticipated her switch to the civilian lifestyle to be like, particularly her first day at work.

The unexplainable death of scientific genius, Freddy Etheridge, is simply perplexing. What is more unlikely is that just a few moments prior to the accident, Diana becomes acquainted with another co-worker who was a friend of Freddy, Austin. Austin believes Freddy’s death is not merely an accident. On the other hand, he thinks Freddy would be the least likely target for anyone with malicious intentions and did not deserve such a gruesome death. Austin is bent on discovering who or what was behind such an unfathomable death.

It is only natural that Diana and Austin would eventually join forces in their search for truth. But what will be the outcome? Who would have the evil intent to cut short the life of a pretty harmless guy? Was Freddy’s death a mere workplace accident or there is more to that narrative than meets the eye?

I would give author Lee Roberts’ Blood Red Moon a rating of 3 out of 4 stars. One of the things I did not like about this book, for which I’m denying it the fourth star, is the failure of the author, whether by intention or inexperience, to make use of sub-plots. The absence of sub-plots in the story made it unidimensional as it only followed the two main characters of the book.

This, in my opinion, leads to the absence of variety and suspense. It also creates the lack of an ability to take hold of the reader’s attention. The saving grace in this instance, which is also one of the things I did like about this book, is that the story does not drag on for long and would not bore the reader.

Aside this, the book was well edited, only having a few typographical errors. I would recommend Blood Red Moon to persons who have a peculiar interest in stories set in the south of the modern day North America as the book is set in New Orleans. The vampire and black magic aspects tied into the storyline would also appeal to fans of the horror genre.
