Review of Rulers of the Galaxy
Rulers of the Galaxy, by Tayma Tameem, is a fantasy sci-fi novel based in space. The novel follows Salarin, a woman who has lost her memory but makes it her purpose to reunite a baby with its parents. Salarin teams up with a raider Bosco to travel across space in search of the child’s parents battling those who get in their way.
I thoroughly enjoyed the way this novel was written. It was broken up well to clearly show when the story changed whose perspective it was being told from and when it was going back to reflect on what had happened in the past. I believe the twists within the story were also well written. The storyline is slowly revealed at well placed areas, so it keeps the audience captivated. Characters were also enjoyable, even if only exposed to the characters for a short time you find yourself quickly enjoying them. Thoroughly enjoyed that there were various perspectives taken from the ‘villains’ and ‘heroes’ of the story. Providing these various perspectives allowed for a more comprehensive understanding of the world Tayma Tameem has created. The ending left me wanting more, but also did not leave the story on a huge cliff hanger. Tying pieces together before the end of the book allows for the reader to want to read more, but not annoyed at the lack of completion.
If I had to choose something I disliked about this novel, then I believe it would be the lack of detail it went into with certain twists. I think the author could have gone into further details with certain aspects of the novel to support the twists. Whilst it was well written, and it is the first book in the series, I believe further details could have made it even more of a page turner. I believe some readers may find the constant switching of characters and/or time a hinderance to the overall flow of the novel. However, I did not find it an issue. I believe as the characters were all well written I did not find myself annoyed when I had to experience a different character’s perspective. Whilst the writing style was enjoyable and easy to read, I think some of the spelling errors or weirdly written phrases made it not reach its full potential.
I give this book a rating of 3 out of 4 stars. I would have liked to give it a 4 out of 4, but unfortunately it contained some spelling errors. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book and would want to read further books in the series. I would recommend this book to individuals who enjoy fantasy/sci-fi novels and more so to people who enjoy space themed novels. It would most likely appeal to a young adult audience. I would recommend it for people over the age of 18 as it does include violence.
