Natural Relief for Anxiety and Stress is a well-written work concerning the management of stress and anxiety. It begins by defining anxiety and some of its associated disorders, including an in-depth look at possible symptoms of anxiety. Stress is then discussed, as is fear, and how the two are intertwined. The book then touches on cognitive distortions, providing examples of some of the most common types. The authors move into a discussion on nutrient-based remedies, herbal-based remedies, and other natural remedies. Different methods of stress and anxiety management are discussed, which include alternative therapies, technology-based therapies, and meditative-based therapies. The work ends with several appendices, all of which are useful. These include tables with summaries of the remedies, a grocery shopping list, and additional reading.

I found this book to be well-written, with simple, straightforward definitions of terms. Many good examples of what different symptoms may look like in different people were provided, creating further awareness of the negative effects of stress and anxiety. The authors made sure to differentiate several times between fixing the problem versus simply alleviating symptoms.

The discussion on distortions was informative – I found myself relating to more of them than I wanted to, and it gives a good stepping off point for researching and understanding any distortions you or a loved one may have. There was at least one instance where a web address was provided within the text to make more information on a topic easily available. Useful tips relating to cooking and temperature were provided, warning against over-heating some of the amino acids and other nutrients, as this lessens their benefit. I really enjoyed the history that was discussed relating to some of the herbal remedies, especially the discussion on the use of valerian being documented as early as the 2nd century in Greece. Finally, the tables provided in the first appendix summarizing the remedy, the symptoms it addresses, and how it works were extremely useful. These are great quick references to go back to for information.

There weren’t many things that I disliked about this work. The only negative thing that stood out to me was the lack of in-text citations/references. In a work that is referencing a lot of different studies, research, and medical reports, the lack of any sort of reference or citation letting the reader know where that information originated is a bit problematic. It certainly makes me wary of taking every statement at face value.

Overall, I give Natural Relief for Anxiety and Stress by Gustavo Kinrys and Alexandra Gold a 3 out of 4 stars rating. There were very few errors throughout the text, and it felt exceptionally well researched, but the lack of any in-text citations in a work such as this seemed like a glaring oversight. This book would be highly beneficial to anyone interested in managing their stress or anxiety, anyone looking for positive practices to add to their lifestyle, and people who prefer to try natural remedies.

while this seems like a book full of good information I don't enjoy reading books of this type.
