[Following is a volunteer review of "Amora" by Grant Hallstrom.]
The book Amora centers on Amora, a young lady who marries an older but equally wealthy man, Leo. He is a politician who is enamoured with his bride as she is the ideal wife. Their blissful life soon begins to take a downward turn as they experience bliss and tragedy. The book Amora explores fascinating themes like love, vengeance, politics, Religion and Philosophy.
The good aspects of the book is that it covers a lot of facets of life in general. It is quite relatable in it's outlook of human characters, virtues and vice. The book centralizes on forgiveness as it echoes the author's personal pain and grief. The motivation behind the writing was a form of personal therapy and desire to help others. It clearly explains why the book was written. In my view, this makes the book relevant to today's society as a lot of human relationships are void of forgiveness and tolerance. Grant J. Hallstom's thorough research was quite evident in the book, from the descriptions of occasions, clothes, culture, and traditions. Historical accuracy portrays an in depth research by the author even though it is his interpretation of a true life event that had occurred. His book narrates the boomerang effect of actions and decisions of people.
The negatives aspect of the book is the fact that the author does not mention a major event in the history of Rome which is the great fire that destroyed two thirds of the country. Though it is his interpretation and presentation, It could have been very vital detail to include as it engineered the rationality of the people in that period. It is also unlikely that a teenager can be more advanced in philosophy than an adult as written in the book. Except Leo's son was extremely intelligent, the possibility of his intellectual maturity and philosophical dialogues with older people is minimal.
My rating of the book Amora is based on different aspects and observations. The cover page which is appealing and appropriate due to the nature of the book. The ability of the writer to capture the interest of readers from the beginning and holding that interest to the end is vital. I rate this book '3 out of 4 stars'. Aside from the reasons mentioned above, the book was edited well. There was an adequate balance of climax and anti-climax scenes in the book. The author illustrates arguments which were typical of the era the book was dated. The aspects of cult or religion, death, premortality and the afterlife, conformity or allegiance to faith were the major sources of debates and arguments in the book.
Amora would appeal to Christians but is commendable to non Christians becuase it addresses issues of life aside from it’s central theme.
