[Following is a volunteer review of "Kalayla" by Jeannie Nicholas.]
Kalayla is an inspirational and family novel by Jeannie Nicholas. It has themes like domestic violence, racism, love and forgiveness. It is narrated in first-person point of view. It was exceptionally well edited. I did not come across any typo or grammar error while I was reading.
Lena is a seventy-two year old business woman. She lives in Cambridge town on one of the apartments owned by her and her family. She had four sons in the past. Two of these sons were twins who died in the war of Vietnam shortly after the death of their father, Lena's husband. This left Lena mourning up to now by wearing black clothes only. Maureen is a white woman of Irish origin. In the past, she was rejected by her family because she was willing to marry a black man, Jamal. Jamal died a few years after they had produced their only daughter and child, Kalayla. Maureen decided to devote her entire life to working for her daughter in order to provide her with every thing she wants. Kalayla is a rebellious young girl with a filthy mouth. She lives with her mother on Lena's apartments. Find out what happens to Kalayla's life by getting yourself a copy of this other fiction novel.
The thing that I liked most about the novel was that it has an inspiring storyline and characters. The changes that come to Lena's and Maureen's lives after a long period of time are inspirational. It brings hope to the reader, who was abandoned by his/her family because of a mistake he/she did in the past that one day he/she may be forgiven. Its storyline shows that people change and forgive when time passes. The character of Kalayla is humorous.
The thing that I disliked most about the novel was that its plot is not interesting. It has an element of suspense, but it is not enough to make it interesting. Some parts of the novel are tedious and some parts of the plot are predictable which displeased me.
The novel contains profanity. I give it a 3 out of 4 stars rating. I have deducted one star because the plot of the novel is not interesting. I recommend it to people who lost hope of being forgiven for the mistakes they did in the past. I recommend it to readers of other fiction and inspirational novels. It is not suitable for young audiences because it has profane words.
