The Watchmaker’s Doctor is written by G.M.T. Schuilling and is the story of Anaya, a young woman who is the victim of a life-threatening accident. Anaya is minutes away from dying but is given a watch that can make her go back in time. Gregory is the watchmaker who gives her the watch. He asks Anaya what year she wants to go back to. He explains she will be able to change things in her life. Anaya decides to go back to when she was a student about to drop out of school. Will Anaya be able to make the right choices as she reflects on the mistakes she has made? The watch is an opportunity to have a second chance in life. Anaya must think carefully about any regret she may have from her previous life and see if her life can take a different course.

The story revolves around two characters, Anaya and Greg. Anaya is a young doctor looking after a seventy-two- year- old watchmaker. Anaya is described as a young woman who suffers from mental issues. Her relationship with her parents is not always easy. Anaya is an intelligent and sensitive woman who has regrets about her past and wants to put things right. She can also suffer from guilt, especially when she realizes her new choices may not only alter her life but other people’s lives too. Knowing that she will die at thirty-five is the incentive to live her life the best she can. She is also described as a loyal friend and a good daughter. She is striving to do the best for the people she loves. Greg is the watchmaker who has built an extraordinary watch that allows people to travel back in time and live their life over and over. He is described as a mysterious man and the reader is not always sure of what his real motive is.

The story is very well written and professionally edited. The book will appeal to most readers who like a story of fantasy and time-travel. There are themes of mental illness and death. The book is a reflection on life and death. It makes the reader reflect on their own life and how important it is to try and make the right decisions in life. The character is given the chance to go back in time and change some bad choices. This leads to the theme of the butterfly effect. Decisions can have an impact on other people as we live in a connected world. The story is short and easy to read. The plot is very good with some unexpected twists.

I enjoyed this book and warmed to the main character. I liked the way the story developed as Anya was making her new choices. It was very moving to see Anya’s reactions and thoughts about her life and the people around her. The reader could feel Anya’s emotions and how she felt about life and death. It was a very interesting reflection on how small changes can have a bigger impact than the one expected.

I thought the ending could have been better. It was left a bit too open-ending for me. I rate this book three out of four stars.
