If you are looking for an original and ‘chuckle while shaking your head in disbelief’ end of the summer novel, this is your book. That time I… Memoirs of a Hypomaniac takes you through some captivating memories from the authors life, ranging from some innocent childhood entrepreneurship to straight up degenerate adult behaviour. It is hard not to get caught up in the story telling and feel as though you are personally hearing these stories from David O’Brien himself.

The book itself is hard to summarize without giving away any spoilers as each chapter involves newer and maybe crazier storylines revolving around the financial world and at most times partying in Vegas. Throughout the book the author is in different life stages, lives in a variety of places and countries but the themes of having a good time, meeting people, and working on making money remain.

The author does a great job introducing and bringing back characters such as the enforcer/driver Ivan and there is always a John that can be found in almost every chapter. The highlight of this read is the simplicity with which it takes to focus and enjoy the stories. If you are looking for an unassuming book to take your mind off things and yet still evoke an array of emotions this book doesn’t have any downsides. However, if you don’t want to hear about the crazy stories from a rich, strip club going, gambling man this wouldn’t be the book for you. What this book presents itself as, is what was delivered and because of that I find no negative points about the book.

I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars . The author set out to write a book that would cause “a few dozen laughs”, as he mentioned in the preface, and that is indeed what happened while reading That time I… Memoirs of a Hypomaniac. The book is well written and although it is not in any chronological order it flows smoothly between chapters, even with what could be considered abrupt and sometimes scandalous story changes.

I would recommend this book to adults who don’t offend easily and enjoy fast paced, short stories that keep you locked in and wanting more. The book has some profanity and sexual scenes so any readers that would find that bothersome I would not recommend this book for you.

This book may leave you wanting to sit down and share some wild stories you just read or try and write some of your own.
