Rulers of the Galaxy by Tayma Tameem is a sci-fi novel centering around the aftermath of the fall of the Elementals, the ruling species of the galaxy. The story follows Salarin, who wakes up in the middle of the battlefield with no memory. Salarin finds a baby during the battle, and in a split-second decision, she takes the baby and runs away to safety. After arriving on the planet of Elventar, she sets out to find the baby’s parents hoping that finding them will reveal her forgotten identity. Along the way, she teams up with Bosco, a raider with no place to call home. Together they embark on a journey across the galaxy to find the baby’s parents and Salarin’s identity.

I was excited to start this book because Tayma Tameem is a master at foreshadowing and plot twists. The plot twist in this book did not disappoint and made the read worth it. Also, Salarin’s and Daaken’s points of view really brought the characters forward and gave them life. They were written in such a way that I would have known who was talking even if their names were not mentioned in the chapters, for example, the sense of discovery in Salarin’s chapters really came through and added strength to her amnesia storyline. The exposition in the first chapters of the book might feel slow for some people, but I think those chapters are fundamental in making the world feel complete and real.

I did not like the imperialist tone that the book has. Both sides of the conflict seem to aim towards the defeat of the other and nothing else. Also, I do not seek out books that center around war as much as Rulers of the Galaxy does. While Daaken’s point of view is fun to read, I could not relate to anything he thinks or feels throughout the book. That is because he is always thinking about war, conflict, and having the upper hand. However, these are a matter of personal preference.

I am giving this book a 4 out of 4 stars. The pacing was perfect. There was never a dull moment, but Tayma Tameem still set aside enough time for the development of the relationships among characters and for the exposition. The characters and their points of view were amazing. The things I did not like are about my taste in books rather than the book itself, so I have no complaints. This book was exceptionally well-edited.

For starters, I would recommend this book to people who have read other Tayma Tameem books because it reminded me of Awakening, which I loved. Also, to teenagers +15 up who like high fantasy. There is no vulgar language, but there is moderate violence. There is no sexual content.
