Review of Spirit of the Season

[Following is a volunteer review of "Spirit of the Season" by Brian Lamont.]
The spirit of the season written by Brian Lamont is a new take on an old story. It is told with down to earth old world charm, with a touch of whimsy. The story tells of a candle maker's son who follows in his father's footsteps. We witness his struggle to fit in with the world, whilst blossoming at his craft. After finding a niche in the world, and experiencing joy and wonder, all is tragically lost. He becomes reclusive and morose. The candlemaker and the light he brought, are now lost to the world. This state is interrupted when he is called upon to help another human being. This event results in him teaching his craft to a young boy, who ultimately improves the techniques. This evolution brings light back into the world. Whilst the candlemaker's apprentice produces candles, the candlemaker makes gifts for the children, this bringing joy to families. Along the way he meets a tailor who is also a social misfit and together they create the toys given to children on a special night in winter.
This is a story of the foibles, sorrows and joys that mankind has experienced throughout the ages. It is a story that speaks of hope and caring. The editing is professionally executed.
The only thing I found somewhat irksome, is that the characters are referred to by profession and one never gets to know them by name.
I rate Lamonts book 4 out of 4 for its' wholesome qualities. The book depicts the resilience of the human spirit in a changing World.
Whilst the book is not intellectually challenging, I believe it is the perfect story for a family to share.
