[Following is a volunteer review of "Sophistries of Summer Days" by Jenny Lofters.]
Sophistries of summer days, by Jenny Lofters, is a novel about friendship, loss, happiness and sorrow. A historical fiction book that takes us into the life of Cherrimina from childhood to adulthood, her life with Nanna and her mother, and her friendship with Dove, the foreigner. It is when Dove and Cherrimina start spending time together that Cherrimina life changes. She starts transforming into the new independent woman.
The novel is absolutely a page-turner. It moves you from peace to shock and brings you back peaceful. It is a journey through a world we do not know much about that leaves you with many thoughts and keeps your mind racing with all the new events to try to predict what would happen next, and then you will be left in shock. I am fascinated by the ability that Lofters has. She managed to write such a complex plot with many twists and keep them that much connected. More to mention is the way she described events and people in the novel. So much in detail, but not even a bit boring. The reader would feel as if sitting with Nanna or joining Cherrimina and Dove in one of their adventures.
First, when I started reading Sophistries of summer days, I was lost with the characters, and each time I would come across a name, I would go back to read again and find out who he was. Later on, I felt like I am living with these characters and know them personally. I think that complexity of these characters adds to and nourishes the complexity of the plot.
My rate for the book is 4 out of 4 stars. It is a fascinating novel that took me to a place I have never visited before. Lofters showed me how similar the island where Cherrimina lived is to my home and how similar the characters are to the people I know. I wished the part of the novel that narrates Cherrimina adulthood events was more detailed. I wanted it to be longer, just like the beginning, but it was a fast-paced part. Still pleasing, but I craved for more.
Overall, Sophistries of summer days is a great fiction and a good choice for readers who enjoy historical fiction books. It will keep you very excited to read and lost with the story from the first page. If it is your type then please go for it. Do not miss the great opportunity.
