Review of American River: Currents
American river current by Mallory M. O’Connor is a book two of American river trilogy a historical fiction novel which entwines the story of seemingly anomalous family. The story revolves around the MacPhalan family of Mockingbird, San Francisco. The broken family whose members are scattered everywhere in the America due to unresolved differences. It all begins in 1963, California after the death of the youngest child of Macphalan family –Julian McPhalan . The book brings you to the different places to reveal the series of events.
The book is divided into 4 parts each part roughly equal in length. The author represents the contemporary American history and the impact of the social movements like anti-war movement, student’s movement, movement for the gay rights and woman’s movement through the fictional characters. Each character reveals more about itself as you turn the pages, in a search of love, intimacy, acceptance, and penance for the betrayal. Each character plays a massive role for building this poignant peace of art, but Kate Mcphalan(the McPhalan’s first child) remains on the focus, born and brought up in the mocking bird the Californian girl comes across the offer for her husband to make his career in Cleveland, Ohio . Her husband Carl immediately agrees with the offer of Maestro Stephan Molnar. Kate broods and sulks, but eventually welcomes her new life in Ohio with her husband and son. Kate never really wanted to get familiar with any place but mocking bird, after moving to Ohio it was not what she had predicted to be. Things seemed perfect at first but gradually everything starts unfolding at its worst, series of unfortunate events brings melancholy, grief of losing the loved once, resentment and angst.
I love how each character conveys different emotions, Alex McPhalan being a hysterical teenager can’t escape from her attachment issues with her maestro, Stephan Molnar. From victimizing herself as to be the most unloved child to accusing her sister and her mother she does everything to seek love and validation so does Stephan Molnar .The story also sheds a light on the aftermath of world war 2 on the countries like America as well as Japan. I personally loved the way author has directed significant historical events in 1960’s America as well as its repercussions through this book.
The author uses very descriptive language which casts a spell making every scene vivid and illusionary this kept me engaged in reading the book. Although Profanity and obscenity didn’t catch my attention sexual passages limit my recommendations to mature readers. My rating is 4 out of 4 because of the Excellency in author’s descriptive style as well as author’s knowledge of American history. I enjoyed this book and its interesting storyline will keep me engaged in reading its last part. Readers who enjoy reading romantic and tragic tale will find it a riveting read.
