Jeannie Nicholas has written a story of community, family and discovering the truth about oneself while searching for the truth about your family. Her novel, Kaylaya centers around the relationship between Kalayla and her neighbor Lena. As they find their lives becoming intertwined, they both face the intricate workings of buried family traumas becoming unraveled as they learn to trust one another.

One of the things I enjoyed the most about this book was the way the main characters were able to find healing through facing their traumas through the help of those around them. The writing would switch between characters offering multiple perspectives on the same issues and interconnecting with supporting characters.

There was some scenes of trauma that were difficult to read as they made you feel deeply for the pain the characters suffered through.

I would rate this book 3 out of 4 stars for how deep and interconnected the characters were and how hopeful the story remained throughout all the suffering.

This book should be read by a mature audience since some of the traumatic scenes are not age appropriate for younger readers. The book may cause a reader to be triggered but then takes readers to a place where facing pain brings healing and hope.
