Review of Deceitful Survival
Deceitful Survival
by LC Lee
3/4
The work of LC Lee entitled a Deceitful Survival is a refreshing read because it offers a new plot – something that is not read from other books I’ve read. The writing style is commendable because it hooks the reader page by page. Some of the grammar and technical features of the book, however, needs enhancement. For example, in the first chapter, the author might want to revise some of the sentences to add more aesthetics and drama to let the readers feel the characters’ emotions. In the statement, “…you will receive the same,” the author should be more specific and definitive because this statement meant to sound as a grave threat.
In terms of character development, Lee’s characters are memorable. They exhibit roundness that resembles real people. The characters interplay in the story give a glimpse of real life. However, there are parts in the book, specifically in the first chapter, where the conversations between the characters are read as seemingly unnatural. The author may want to develop this aspect in the book to add more emotions specially on the part of the brothers. In some culture, especially in the culture of the author, the masculinity of male characters in the book must be carefully portrayed as lacking of emotion – like not able to express pain and sadness. But in this book, I would love to read and feel the emotions of the brothers knowing how hard and tragic the events are as they unfold before them.
With regards to the character development of the heroine, I commend the author because the heroine’s portrayal in the book added more impact and influence in the story. The author was able to beautifully develop the plot around the heroine and gave the impression that the heroine’s characterization is a round one and not a flat characterization that would’ve read as monotonous and unrealistic. Additionally, the description and development of the heroine all throughout the story is not a giveaway to the readers at all. The author gave the readers enough space to imagine and visualize the heroine in any way they would want to which makes the book appealing and stimulating to the readers’ mind.
On the other hand, the overall writing style, aesthetics, and language of the author is commendable. I am definitely hooked in story and the development of the plot is good. Overall, the book is well-written and would appeal to a lot of different audience especially those who dive into historical fiction genre.
