Review of The Spirit of Want
William H. Coles explores several topics including love, intolerance, justice, religion, politics, relationships, and many more. These topics directly or indirectly affect human beings daily, whether aware or not. The story narrates a tale of Lucy, the protagonist, a self-centered, arrogant, and yet successful high-powered lawyer. She meets Luke at the party that her dad hosted. Luke is her dad's colleague. She is later asked to give him a lift back home. Unfortunately, they were involved in a terrible accident. As a result, the court charges her with vehicular manslaughter. She, however, manages to find ways to be acquitted of those charges. One way is to marry Luke as a strategy to get him to defend her. They are blessed with a daughter, Jennifer. An opportunity is then presented to Lucy to lead the defense. The client is a TV evangelist accused of child molestation. She loses the case and the evangelist, Hower Bain, skips the country. He returns to his home country, Ghana. Lucy loses her job, and she is barred. Not thinking much about her family, whom she hardly spent time with since working on the case, she decides to follow after Hower Bain.
She is convinced the evangelist is innocent. There is a saying " where there is smoke, there is fire." I doubt a person can be accused of something that horrendous for no reason at all. There should be something that has led to the accusations. What could be inciting her decision to abandon her family to pursue this particular client? What discoveries await her in a foreign country?
Thumbs up to the author for giving a detailed description of the main characters at the beginning of the book. It is bound to get readers curious to read further, just as I was. The Spirit of Want by William H. Coles is literary fiction with many twists and entertaining incidents. I enjoyed a look into many themes found in this book. Elements emphasizing these themes are numerous. In one example, Lucy is described as a " lawyer, famous for little tolerance for inferior intelligence." However, the storyline is all over the place. There is a lack of connection when the story transition from one chapter to the next. Furthermore, the introduction of new characters with each chapter is depleting and can leave the reader distracted. The author has too many ideas. This is the first book I am reading from William and I find his writing style not coherent.
Having said that, the editors did a great job. I have only come across few typos. For instance, Lucy's husband is spelled Luke Osbourne on page three, whereas on page four it appears as Luke Osborne. I particularly like the title of the book. It's perfect given the fact that as human beings we are forever driven by our desires and wants. This is apparent in this book, where Hower Bain will do anything possible to stay in power and even abuse that power. While on the other hand, Luke's desire for Lucy makes him ignore her true character. He is hoping for happily ever after but was truly disappointed. For sensitive readers, the book contains several curse words that could be offensive and not so heavy sexual content.
Since the book has some romance in it, the fans of romance stories can read the book. I recommend it to the lovers of mystery. They will enjoy it. Though it had too much going on, it's a pleasing read, and I was still mesmerized. I rate The Spirit of Want four out of four stars. I could not find a reason strong enough to deduct points.
