In Tales of the Seventies, the author introduces a collection of 8 different stories. The concept of mini stories intrigued me so I decided to dive in. As David Done explains in his foreward, these stories were an unfinished collection he started in the early seventies while living in San Francisco. The stories range from a husband faced with a dying wife to a couple of burglars stealing an animal from the zoo!

All of the stories are well written and explore different personalities and plots. Each story will for sure leave the reader with feelings of remorse, sympathy, and perhaps a little confusion. If you are someone who likes twists and turns, this is the book for you. The story of the burglars stealing the ocelot from the zoo was my personal favorite. It was funny and hard to believe was based on a true story that happened in Oakland in the 1970's.

Although I found some of the stories entertaining, for the most part this book was not my cup of tea. Most of the stories were very dark and included a lot of vulgar language and sexual innuendoes. After reading a majority of each story I was left feeling disappointed at the language and very dark feelings and actions of the characters. As a reader I felt the language and sexual content wasn't necessary.

I give Tales of the Seventies 2 out of 4 stars. As stated before the sexual content and language left a bad taste in my mouth. Also I felt that since the author chose to write a collection of different stories, why not change names of characters more? It seemed many of the stories had the same names yet were totally different characters.

If the collection of mini stories in one novel intrigues you, then you may want to give Tales of the Seventies a try. However, realize these stories are dark and include suicide, strong sexual situations, and vulgar language.
