Ark of the Apocalypse by Tobin Marks is an apocalypse/ dystopian science fiction novel that explores the duality of human nature through space and time. Tobin Marks takes the reader on a journey with catastrophic world events through new eyes that challenges the ingenuity and perseverance of humanity when all hope is lost. When humanity reaches a crisis point with no other way to survive, the people of Earth create the means to adventure into space in order to keep humanity alive and thriving through unique means that link humanity, the universe, and fate.
There is not a whole lot about this book that I personally liked. However, there were two things that I did like about the book. The first thing that I liked was that through the use of dialogue. The dialogue portrayed the characters relationships, growth, and conflicts in ways that enjoyably moved the story forward. The second thing that I liked was a couple of the characters that appeared in the second half of the book that took the plot in a direction that I wasn’t expecting based on the book description.
There is a whole mess about this book that I do not like. The first thing that bothers me is that the book covers a vast array of characters but not really a main character to carry the story line. The amount of character point-of-view changes made it hard for me to actively be interested in the story as it became quite confusing. It felt like as soon as I was getting to know a set of characters the chapter would end or the characters would die and a new set of characters would be introduced. The writing style was also hard for me to get into as all of the sentences are long winded and made it hard to read. The author also explicitly told the reader exactly how the ending was going to happen half way through the book and when the ending happened almost exactly how it was foretold; I was left disappointed and not wanting to read any subsequent books because I know the majority of what is going to happen. The foreshadowing was creative but it left zero room for the story to progress as it might have if that wasn’t a present and sole identifying aspect of some of the characters.
I give this book a 1 out of 4 stars . I give this book one star because of all the issues listed that I encountered when reading this book. The writing style was hard to read. There was no main character to move the plot forward and therefore no invested interest for me, as the reader to keep reading. The foreshadowing was concrete and the story felt like a means to an end and not really something enjoyable and organic.
This book is best suited for adults based on the content and the language used. The content wasn’t in my opinion overly graphic. But the world events are such that a younger audience may not understand it or be unsettled by the content. There is massive amount of death as a result of violence and that might disturb some people.
