Devil Among Us is the second installment in Jack Winnick’s antiterrorism, thriller book series, Lara and Uri. Lara Edmond, a special agent with the FBI’s Joint Terrorism Task Force, is brought in to help with the aftermath when a New York synagogue is blown up. The investigation takes an even more troubling turn when it appears the attack may have been carried out by a family of three who were members of the synagogue.

As things escalate Uri Levin, the Mossad agent Lara teamed up with in the previous story, is called upon to assist with the case. Together Lara and Uri uncover an intricate plan and a web of infiltrators in both America and Israel. The suicide bombers may not have been who they seemed to be, but without definite proof, both America and Israel could be in a lot of trouble. And the clock is ticking as enemies move in on Israel from all sides.

I have really enjoyed all the books in Jack Winnick’s Lara and Uri series. They are exciting and action-packed, and they have some great characters and storylines. I enjoy seeing the relationships between the characters grow from book to book, and I have appreciated seeing Uri and Lara’s reputations become legendary. In this book especially, I liked watching Lara and Uri learn more about each other’s training and develop a deeper appreciation for each other’s skills and expertise.

This installment in particular delved quite a bit into the politics of the various perspectives concerning America’s support of Israel, and the balancing act of the government’s decisions regarding that support. I didn’t feel that it took away from the action. There was still plenty of nail-biting, page-turning excitement, but all the government meetings certainly were not my favorite part. I tend to enjoy the undercover missions in these books, and this story did still have some of that.

I gladly give Devil Among Us four out of four stars. It is a great addition to the series and overall story. It also appears to have been written and edited well. I would recommend this book, and the others in the series, to anyone who enjoys a good espionage thriller coupled with some romance. The story does deal with some scary and disturbing topics, such as suicide bombing, torture, and rape, so I would not recommend it for young people or anyone who may be especially sensitive to those topics in a book.
