Review of Living Forward After Loss
Living Forward after Loss by Kathleen Ho is a book that provides helps for spouses grieving the loss of their loved ones. The writer wrote this book from the painful experience of losing her husband of ten years. So, it is safe to say, the writer’s experience serves as a wealth of knowledge for others. Kathleen’s goal is to share helpful and healthy ways to heal from the loss of a spouse. No two people grieve the same way, as there is no formula on how people should grief. However, the writer shared her story and experiences of how she moved past her grief. Although this book focuses on the loss of a spouse, anyone grieving can read it.
Few days after I picked this book to review, I lost a dear friend of mine. He got shot while on an errand for his mum. His death was unexpected and painful. When I received news of his death, I was in denial until I saw a picture of the incident on Facebook. I cried for days whenever I thought of him and, this book helped me cope with the loss. I found some measure of peace while reading this book. In Living Forward after Loss, you will find the compelling and practical strategies that help to heal inner wounds.
I like the writer’s opening speech in the introduction; "If you have met death, I share this unimaginable pain with you… Our life is too short and precious to be dissatisfied and vengeful. Make every moment counts." I like that each chapter begins with a quote. The quotes are hopeful and help to make the reader feel at ease. The writer's words are truthful and do not make light of the situation or give false hope. One instance is in page 5 where she said, "In tragedy, it is hard to find the right solution."
I like that the writer did a lot of research with her work, although she was writing about her painful experience. I also like the summary of each chapter at the end of the chapters: this helps grieving spouses to be able to benefit from the book even by just reading the summaries. I like the size of the book as it encourages grieving spouses to read it, as it is not voluminous and the words are simple. My only dislike is that the writer focused on the loss of a spouse while the point in the book can help anyone grieving.
This book is professionally edited and well written. Also, the dislike mention above does not in any way subtract from the book. So, I rate the book a 4 out of 4 stars. Although this book doesn’t promote any particular religion, heaven and God was mention. I recommend this book to anyone grieving the loss of a loved one and to those serving as a caregiver to anyone grieving.
