[Following is a volunteer review of "Opaque" by Calix Leigh-Reign.]
Opaque is the debut novel of author Calix Leigh-Reign and the first installment in the Scion Saga. Opaque is a Young Adult Novel with a mix of supernatural and young Romance.
Adam is a teenager suppressing some kind of darkness in himself. He views the entire society as a subservient place and the humans in them as animals prone to monotonous ways. In the beginning, we are lead to believe he is psychotic. His only solace is his mother whom he adores and the wind which he nicknamed Zista.
Everything changes when he meets Carly. He is drawn to her in a way he cannot even begin to fathom. They form a strong bond and are inseparable. With the help of Carly, he begins to discover secrets of his bloodline that his beyond imagination. He gets closure on why he is feeling the things he feels and a better understanding of his surroundings. They are on the constant run from a group of evil scientist that wants to destroy the descendants of their bloodline. This book is about the true bonds of family, friendship, and love.
The positive points of this book are that it has a good storyline and the relationship between the characters is truly beautiful. The evolution of Adam's character from being a dark twisted boy to a loving, caring, and powerful person is gratifying. He would go to the ends of the world to protect the two most important women in his life.
I don't have much to say about the negatives but in the beginning, it was weird reading about Adam's Oedipus complex with his mother. But that was cleared up in the between as to why that happened. A lot of time was put into constructing the story for the final battle but it was rushed into and finished off in just one small chapter. The author could have prolonged it a bit. A lot of Russian phrases were used, so we don't know what was being said as there were no translations available.
I would rate this book 3 out of 4. The overall story was good. There are a errors here and there but nothing major. This book Is ideal for all those who like Young Adult Fiction. It is a little bit dark and disturbing for young readers but I sure would recommend it to people who love young adults, science fiction, and a little bit of dark horror.
