Review of How To Be Successful
M. Curtis McCoy’s fourth novel is a motivational and self-help book for aspiring entrepreneurs titled: How to be successful: Think like a Leader . He talks about his own experience: going from having nothing and living in the back of a retail store, to having severe brain cancer and then becoming a super successful businessman, author, and motivational speaker; he also uses standardized interviews with many successful people to give you different point of views and/or experiences on becoming successful.
Many parts of this book are fantastically motivational to starting a business, or improving your daily life and habits. You, as the reader want to keep reading to get as much information as you can because you really think that the information in the book can bring real improvements to your life. Which is honestly the goal for every self-help and motivational book. Another plus with the book is the writing, it is light and easy to read, and a perfect fit for this type of book.
The problem I had with this book, is that all the things mentioned on the past paragraph are not constant. What I mean is that some parts of the book are great, but some are a bit dull and hard to read through. The issue with asking the same questions to the same public (in this case, to successful business people) is that you get similar answers and makes the interviews in the book incredibly repetitive. Also, some of the interviewed’s answers heavily relied on religion and make the book slightly less enjoyable for non-religious people; this doesn’t make the book bad, but somewhat narrows its target audience.
I personally would’ve like seeing more of Curtis’ journey with his brain cancer, I found it extremely motivational and a beautiful story that could fit in the context of this book. But sadly, it was just mentioned from time to time and it was never prioritized or important.
I decided to give this book 3 out of 4 stars, because apart from my issue with repetitiveness, it is a pretty good book for its target audience. Despite the good rating, I need to emphasize this book is definitely not for everyone, and may not bring nearly the same level of enjoyment to someone who is not part of the targeted demographic.
How to be Successful: Think like a leader is an amazing book if you’re a Christian entrepreneur-hopeful. This book effectively uses many Biblical references to motivate, and teach various lessons in business and life. Unfortunately, if the reader is not religious it can result in a slightly boring and dull read.
