The Fourth Kinetic by Brady Moore is a modern sci-fi/fantasy novel featuring a main character with telekinetic powers. Rion is a 17-year-old loner who is used to moving from place to place on short notice due to his mothers mysterious research job. Rion discovered his telekinetic abilities, the ability to move objects with his mind, at the start of puberty, and has been honing his skills in secret ever since.

Just as he is getting settled in his new school, and manages to make his first real friend, his mom declares it’s time to move again. But this time, she seems more frantic than ever. On their drive away, everything changes for Rion when they are chased and he gets separated from his mother. He discovers that he is being hunted by a mysterious pseudo-military group called Psyiirin, and that there are others like him out there, others with powers who call themselves the Clairvoyants. The Clairvoyants know of their own history, but they do not know what to make of Rion. There were only supposed to be 12 of them, but Rion would make 13.

Through the course of the novel, Rion discovers he has more power then he could ever imagine. His mission is to find his missing mother, and to answer all the burning questions he has about her, himself, and their mysterious past. Each shred of a clue they find only leads to more questions.

The Fourth Kinetic is a fast paced, action packed novel that’s hard to put down. Each character is distinctive and unique with in depth histories and motives. The book also boasts a healthy amount of diversity, something rarely seen in fantasy novels. Rion, the main protagonist, is black. The ending answers some of your questions, but leaves you wanting more. I look forward to reading further books in the series.

Some aspects of the plot line are predictable, and it includes many of the common tropes found in most young adult literature. The loner, outsider protagonist being one of them, along with a mysteriously absent parent (the father), and running from the law in a dystopian setting are all patterns we have seen before. In a lot of ways, the book reminds me of the Maximum Ride series by James Patterson. The entire book also takes place in an incredibly short time frame, less than a week, which makes the character development feel a bit unrealistic and forced.

I would rate The Fourth Kinetic by Brady Moore as 3 out of 4 stars. While it does lean heavily on common tropes, it’s still a very enjoyable and exciting novel. I would recommend this book to a teenage and young adult audience who enjoy action packed thrillers. While there is some minor swearing throughout, there are no major f-bombs or derogatory language. There are some minor romantic scenes, but they are not central to the plot and there is nothing overtly sexual in nature. Descriptions of violence and death are quite vivid however, so parental discretion is still advised for younger teens.

I did not notice any spelling or grammatical errors in this novel; it appears to be well edited.
