Onyx Gold’s Chameleons is a romantic and suspenseful novel about literary agent Zia Lennox’s complicated love triangle between two equally desirable men. One man is her charming fiancé, a lawyer working in the same building as Zia that comes from a rich southern family; the other man is her passionate client, who lives across the country in New York and wrote the best-selling series that promoted Zia to the senior literary agent status. Throughout the story, Zia is torn between her feelings of love and lust, guilt and desire, and a nagging suspicion of the similarity of her client’s books to real-life crimes. Assisted by her best friend’s advice, Zia must choose which path she wants her life to take while trying to limit the emotional damage done to either man.

I am rating this book a 4 out of 4. It was very well-written and I did not have any difficulty reading it. The plot was so well developed and engaging, too, that I felt like I was reading a NY Times bestseller. Without any glaring editing errors or plot holes, I do not have any hesitancy in rating this book a full 4/4, and wholeheartedly believe the author has earned it. The book is also quite descriptive with scenes, but not in an overpowering way, and I thought that the author creates the perfect balance of background, descriptions, action, and dialogue.

I recommend this book to any reader that enjoys romance novels or a suspenseful read that is also a mystery not of the “who done it?” style. However, it is a highly erotic romance, with rather blunt descriptions; therefore, I do not recommend this book to anyone other than a mature audience. There is also swearing present in the dialogue, and mentions of violence and murder.

The element of this book that I liked the most was how the author added an alternate perspective occasionally. I felt that this small window into the other character’s side of the story added to the suspense of the plot and made me more eager to get to the end and figure out the surprises that were sure to come. The author utilized these instances of narration change to excellently set up the story for its climax.

I do not have many complaints about this novel, so there was really only one element of it that I did not particularly like. This was the way the author would describe some aspects of the characters in a bit of a too-specific way. For example, the sentence, “She wraps her hands around her twenty-six inch waist while impatiently waiting his reply,” written on page 65 felt awkward to read. The other sentence that struck me in this way was on page 126 as Gold writes, “She initiates her plan by standing even closer to him, allowing her 36D breasts to graze his arm.” There is a fine line between being descriptive enough for proper imagery and making the writing too detailed. In my opinion, these instances and any others like them in the book added a bit of unnecessary detail, as they do not add to the story enough to justify their use. This may just have been my own pickiness in the descriptions, so I did not allow it to have an overall effect on my enjoyment of the novel.
