Dread Tribunal of Last Resort by Brian Kaufman tells the horrifying story of war. It focuses on Decker, a young man from Virginia, who left home for more than two years. Decker returns to his family when the country is almost neck-deep into war. He does not feel comfortable with the idea of going to war. He is in love with Paula who comes from a decent family too. Decker had hoped to impress his family with his illumination on arrival, however, the response he got was cold.

As the war progressed, his love for Paula was strained as he knew he would have to take up arms and fight in the war someday. Paula on the other hand was not open to the idea of bearing arms against another in war. When Decker left home he tried to maintain a good relationship with Paula by writing her letters constantly. However, his involvement in the war would only strain their relationship the more. Paula chooses to marry another man, Whitaker Hill, an opposite character to Decker. Would Decker forgive Paula? Would they find a way to reunite? The twists in this book will keep you fascinated from the beginning till the end.

I found plenty of positive aspects to this book. This book explores the different worlds of free people and slaves. The author used unique characters to show what sort of romantic relationships exist between slaves and free people. For instance, when it was discovered that Mollie was in love with someone who she refused to disclose. Also, the way Paula tries to be discreet when receiving Decker's letters. I enjoyed the author's storytelling as this book creates a visual image of the civil war. The way the story is narrated would give a reader the feeling of a first-hand experience of the war.

The book contained a few negative aspects. I noticed that it was a bit difficult for me to keep reading the book at some point as the author did not give room for proper character development. Also, this book contains some horrific scenes. There should have been a warning to guide the reader.

I found minimal errors in this book. It was professionally edited. I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars. I gave it a perfect rating because, I enjoyed the story from the beginning to the end. I did not give it a lower rating because, the few negative points I highlighted did not affect my overall pleasure while reading this book. I recommend this book to people who enjoy reading war stories.
