[Following is a volunteer review of "Toward Happier Choices" by Michael Oborn.]
Toward Happier Choices is Michael Oborn's autobiography, displaying the indescribable pain of ambivalence that he has experienced when choosing between his religion and his beliefs. The author also shows us how he came to understand the value of his own beliefs. Additionally, he displays quotes that inspire him and expounds on his beliefs about life. He also describes people who have made a significant impact on his life and made him the person he is today.
What I found mesmerizing about this book was how honest the author was in describing his journey and beliefs. Throughout the book, the author shows how his childhood transitioned into adulthood, dealing with things such as his separation from his ex-wife and cutting his ties with his parents and friends because of his beliefs that differ from theirs. Additionally, he was a tireless advocate for causes such as women's equality and environmental protection. I also liked how the author approached the topic of addiction. It was also interesting to read this book because it is divided into three sections. The stories contained in the book are inspiring and can positively change your life.
However, the author neglected to take care of some matters when he was writing his book, for example when he made sarcastic remarks about religion in general. I think that when the author approached a sensitive subject such as religion, he should have been more considered. Moreover, the book lacks proper editing; there are some parts which could be written better. In addition, many readers may be disappointed with the author for using a quote from a known dictator like Adolph Hitler.
Despite its content and purpose, I rate this book "3 out of 4". It offers a remarkable picture of a man who found his own path and fought the norms of society. However, I wished the author had been more respectful of religious, political, and philosophical viewpoints.
Those who are interested in learning more about the life of an extraordinary individual, and who want to be inspired, should read this book. This book is suitable for all ages. You will find the stories included in the book inspiring and motivating. The book is absolutely one of the books that you can read more than once, in order to develop a clear vision for your life, and it encourages critical thinking. It is clear that the author imparts an abundance of wisdom, and you can learn from his experiences.
