Review of We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies
We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies by Matthew Tysz is the first book in a series, set within the prosperous kingdom of Voulhire. We follow King Wilhelm and his friend Lord Eldus as they turn their attention to bringing the golden age of Voulhire to the city of Hillport, which has recently been under a shadow of its recent history. Lord Eldus relocates to Hillport, where he attempts to remove the stain left by the crimes committed by its previous lords. Meanwhile, Galen, who has fled from the war-torn Isle of Princes to take over his great uncles smithy, attempts to assimilate into this new land and learn his uncles trade with the help of the ambiguous executor of his uncles will, Rowan.
We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies introduces us into a land with a full history and depth that readily comes to life. Through a interesting and dynamic variety of characters, we discover many aspects of Voulhire, from religion to politics, and magic to economics. On top of this, we follow several storylines that show us not everything is as perfect as could be in this golden age. Our protagonists meet characters throughout their journeys that aren’t supporters of Voulhire's prosperity, as well as characters with motives that aren’t quite so black and white as they may initially seem. The plot was clear and exciting, but as expected from the first book of a series, we finish the book with many questions unanswered and mysteries still unsolved. All of these factors lend to characters and a world with depth and anything else you could want from a fantasy book, and lay the foundations for what could be a thrilling series.
I can find very little to criticize about this book. The book has been very well written and edited, the characters are varied and unique, the world created seems complete and alive. The plot had points which were unpredictable, the protagonists faced conflict and challenges that weren’t easily surmountable. In short, this book had everything you could ask for.
With this in mind, I would rate this book 4 out of 4 stars. The book was greatly enjoyable, and I look forward to reading the further instalments in this series.
I would recommend this book to anyone who is a fan of fantasy books. It is worth noting that some slightly more mature themes are mentioned in this book, and so this book would not be suitable for children.
