[Following is a volunteer review of "Ark of the Apocalypse" by Tobin Marks.]
Dream of a new beginning, on a planet with only a selected few and the entire world we know as Earth disappearing due to a nuclear war and environmental issues. Ark of Apocalypse written by Tobin Marks takes us on an outer space journey with aliens, reptile-like creatures, astral projection, World War Extinction, and genetically engineered everything, can you imagine a blue apple? As Nadezhda is adamant to stay around for 1000 years, when the next war starts, her only hope of achieving this task is to rope in Kanend’ra for help.
As North Korea, China, and India instigate a war against Russia, Russian President Volkov seeks assistance from his American ally. They share a love-hate relationship, which resulted in a complete breakdown when Samara suffered a missile attack, and a full-out nuclear war killing millions of people in one day and the rest in weeks to come. Olga Yanbeyeva; the matriarch of the family, guiding and manipulating them to follow the legacy of the Path as passed down generations before. Upon her discovery that her out-of-body experience caused her acute leukemia, she must appoint a successor speedily, ensure the family bunker is fully functional and most importantly the Yanbeyeva legacy remains strong and pure. Nadezhda Yanbeyeva joins the crew onboard the Magnella II and commences life in orbit, while her sister Leka will carry her children and continue with the family in the bunker. While Nadya’s visions indicate another war looming with the species of Log’rfold, this inspires her to create a dragon Rodinya with a very intelligent mind.
The positive aspect I take with me is the manner how kids were encouraged and steered in various directions of education to benefit a particular purpose. I was inspired by the continuation of a family or a project, the next generation continued where the previous one had stopped. The idea of creating a new home in outer space is intriguing and fascinating, for future generations I see that as a huge positive.
In my opinion, the author Tobin Marks made use of too many different characters, different scenes, and loads of scientific jargon, this confused me tremendously, hence I perceive these aspects as negative. I truly didn’t understand the lizard soldiers, Kanend’ra, and the relationship with Nadya, how they all fit this narrative left me puzzled. One other negative aspect I noticed is the sacrifices that were made for the benefit of their families, the colony, or humans. I found it disheartening that no one actually paid much attention to Doctor Randall Burt’s warnings about the impact of climate changes on marine life and water shortages in the future. With Leka and her family in the bunker, how will they interlink/ engage with Nadya? I’m hoping after 1000 years of the war there will be a reunion.
The book had many characters and personalities which were confusing and difficult to comprehend, the respective roles of the characters were not clearly outlined either, hence my confusion. However, the book was professionally edited because I found only a few editing errors.
This book will be most appreciated by readers of all age groups who believe in the “BIG BANG” Theory. This book has considerable profanity and violent scenes. Due to my dislikes and vague understanding of the book, I rate Ark of Apocalypse 2 out of 4 stars.
