[Following is a volunteer review of "Shadow's Adventure Home" by Kathy Kovar.]
Shadow’s Adventure Home by Kathy Kovar is a richly written and illustrated children’s book about a cat named Shadow. Shadow loves to watch the birds outside the windows of his home and dreams of being able to one day catch one. Then, to his dismay, his life is turned upside down when his family packs him up and moves to a new home in the country. Shadow is scared and does a lot of hiding. But a day arrives when he comes out and discovers a door has been left open and there’s a bird right there within his grasp. His fateful choice to go after the bird takes him on an adventure that he never could have dreamed possible. It is one that also changes his life forever.
Shadow’s Adventure Home is a happy read based loosely upon the loss and return of the author’s own cat sharing the same name. The illustrations were done by Mardel Rubio in an eye-catching and vibrant array of colors sure to catch a child’s eye. I also noted a minimal number of errors during my read and believe this book to be professionally edited.
While I believe this book to be well edited, the writing flow was more than a little clunky to me. This detracted somewhat from my reading experience as I had to re-read a few passages to fully appreciate them. There were also several pages that were quite wordy, and others that only had a line or two of text on them. With a little more balance, and a better flow, this book would be considerably improved from its already enjoyable form.
These facts don’t alter my view on the stars this book earned. As a result, I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars. This book was very well done as a whole and spreads the feeling of hope and joy to the reader. I finished reading this book with a smile on my face, and would love to see a further adventure story about Shadow if one became available. This reflects itself in my rating.
I also think that this book is suitable to all readers, and not just the children that it is geared for. Many pet owners might find joy in knowing that at least one adventuring pet returned home safe and sound. Being a children’s story, there was no profanity or erotic scenes to be found within its thirty-one pages.
