The majority of us like our mornings with the newspaper or watching the news on mobile in one hand and a cup of coffee in the other. Seeing that a company has gained funding or will go public generally gets our attention in the news. And we are left wondering how those people are achieving such incredible success. How To Be Successful by M. Curtis McCoy is a book that spills the beans for us. The book features interviews with eight successful people from a wide range of professions. They are asked a set of fifteen questions that the author has carefully crafted. These give a clear understanding of the drive behind them. Also included in this book are chapters on words of wisdom from the author's entrepreneurial journey and his personal life.

In exploring the common attributes of thriving people, I was quite surprised. From their outlook on life, core values to habits. The author's journey was quite inspiring. Despite his health struggles with diabetes and later brain tumor, he pursued his journey regardless and strived at it relentlessly. This led him to become the amazing entrepreneur he is today.

This book reinforced the fact that people don't need to have the talent to succeed. Anyone passionate, willing to put in the time, and prioritizes their work can achieve great heights in life. I specifically liked the response to the question “What is your definition of success?” from all the interviewees. Each of the respondents had a different view of the question. This shows there isn't a right answer that's suitable for everyone.

There is very little to not like in this book. I would have liked to ask another question, which is, “could you break down your career trajectory into 5 steps and list them in chronological order?”.This would give an outline of the steps they took to achieve their dream. This is something not a lot of people know.

This book is sought of like a mentor we always want in our life. It contains tangible steps for a person to improve and work for their dream. It did broaden my thinking horizon, and I am grateful for it. Being accountable for what I am and not blaming on circumstances is the biggest takeaway for me. This book is exceptionally well-edited, and I give it a well-deserved 4 out of 4 stars for the above reasons.

This is the perfect book if you're looking for some inspiration, self-help, or personality development. This book has a low page count, so it is easy to finish reading.

I would like to discover what the author has to say about success. I agree with the author, it is a personal and subjective definition. Great review!
