The Entanglement Review
The novel Entanglement follows the life of Geena, her brother, her parents and every person who unfortunately got entangled in their life. The book opens in the year 2044 where Geena gets word that one of her parents is dead.
The story takes us 60 years back to the year 1894 to be precise, where we follow the story of a drug addict and prostitute, Beth Sturgess. She was able to escape that life with the help of Joe Tinkerman, who got her on a sail boat to Bermuda. She runs for her life because she was told by the locals that the man she was living with was a slave owner and rapist.
As the story progresses, we meet other characters like Kevin Nuss who is Beth’s husband and also a cop, Martin Case, a math professor, Ellen Mckinnon and many others. Danenbarger intertwines their lives making it look like they are part of this huge and twisted family tree. By the end of the book most of the characters are dead either physically or emotionally which explains why we see Geena alone in the mid 21 century wanting to reconnect with her brother Davis.
Danenbarger very descriptive character development shows how each of the characters get to where they are, why they did what they did, how they kept every dark secret. Though their stories are unsettling and disturbing, I find it also interesting and engaging.
The best moment of the book is when you link the connection between characters via relationship or encounters they have had with each other. The author describes the theory of quantum entanglement trying to use it as the reason why all of the characters’ lives are linked but he keeps it ominous and the ending wind open, but if quantum entanglement was the reason why they are linked then Beth Sturgess is the chain reaction.
One other thing I like about the book is the suspense. Danenbarger brings all the stories together. Each character has a different story and as I have mentioned before, they never meet yet all of their stories intertwine together to the bigger plot. The chapter title “Friday” of the impending doom, starts with a car wreck, which Kevin witnesses, that’s bound to involve established characters.
John Danenbarger’s “The Entanglement” makes you think about your family history and if you have had a Geena Russ in your family, someone who has rewritten your family stories, who never tells you the full truth about your relatives, you’d never know if you were related to murderers and serial killers because the dark family secrets would have followed her.
3 out of 4 - good, recommend it
