[Following is a volunteer review of "Whale of Wonder" by Marie-Paule Mahoney.]
Whale of Wonder by Marie-Paule Mahoney is a lovely book that tells the tale of Tahlequah, an orca whale with a fascinating story. It is a book for children, but I found it very entertaining and emotional.
Tahlequah is having a conversation with her son while swimming together in the Pacific Ocean. The mother teaches Notch about the habits of their pod (family group), their traditions, and their specific language. Notch wants to know more about humans and the terrible consequences of their lifestyle. Tahlequah also reveals the sad story of her baby, Noah’s little sister. Are you curious to discover the event that inspired this touching book?
I loved how the author chose to present the subject; the first part introduced the whales and their dialogue, followed by a more detailed and educational presentation of Tahlequah’s case. I found plenty of intriguing information regarding orcas, and I was amazed to discover they can feel love and empathy.
I must mention the beautiful illustrations signed by Ginger Triplett. The drawings are bright and full of life, and the orcas are charming. Also, they convey a lot of emotion. The text and the image go well together; they are also very suitable for the intended audience.
I recommend the book to children from 5 to 9 years, especially if they are interested in animals and marine life. The author introduced some crucial information about environmental protection that can be beneficial for the entire family. They will learn that using plastic and throwing it into the ocean can hurt the whales. Moreover, the animals from the marine shows are sad because they are isolated from their families and forced to live in dire conditions.
Whale of Wonder deserves a rating of four out of four stars since I couldn’t find any issues. I discovered a delightful book that educates the reader about nature in a very touching way. It’s a story about family, friendship, and small gestures that can help the whales.
