Review of We Drank Wine
Marion Reidel has compiled a fantastic collection of short but captivating stories in her book, We Drank Wine and Other Stories. The book explores the themes of family, friendship, identity, and growing up. These stories are told through the lens of a group of upper-middle-class couples and their families.
The book is made up of a series of short stories. Though each story is from a different character's point of view, you observe the storyline's direction. The main characters are Beth, Celeste, Sandra, and Janice. These women met in the university and have a group which they call the Monday Morning Mother's Group, where they drink and share their parental woes while a babysitter watches their children. They express the ups and downs in their marriages and lives. In each of their story, they explain their challenges concerning parenthood and friendship. Read the book to learn from the group and revelation about their individual life.
The writing of the book was very captivating and easy to read. Reidel did an excellent job in making the characters both sympathetic and authentic. I love how the author masterfully handled each story, weaving them seamlessly into each other. A character goes into a lengthy and emotional monologue, citing instances when she and her friends drank wine. In the end, the reader has a feeling of the memories and the emotions involved. This is a unique display of talent from the author, and I admire it.
What I love most in the book is the characterization. The book has a wide cast of characters, yet each character feels distinct and unique. My favorite character is Celeste. She was portrayed as the rich and pretentious housewife who cares more about her social standing than anything else, and indeed, this is who she is. She serves as a villain or at least a villainous character to many others. She is dominating, controlling, and manipulative. Despite all this, I could not help but be drawn to the charisma of the character. She is a woman that sees what she wants and goes for it. Her single-mindedness and stubbornness make her one of the most compelling characters of the story, even when cruel to others.
There is nothing I dislike in the book, as the story is entertaining and educative. Therefore, I rate We Drank Wine and Other Stories 4 out of 4 stars. I observed a few errors in the book, but they did not distract my reading experience.
I admire the author's writing style and enjoy the humor in the book. I recommend We Drank Wine and Other Stories to readers that love book on contemporary drama. There is enough conflict and drama in the book, as well as elements of mystery.
