Review of Containment Breach
Containment Breach by Yandell is a story about aliens referred to as "Creatures". These aliens were created and nurtured by a scientist, Demetrius Zayack, who had killed himself prior to the story. For an unknown reason, these Creatures had become extremely aggressive towards humans and killed any and all that they came across. To combat them, the military turns to a team of scientists led by a close follower of Dr. Zayack's work, Walter Smithton. He's also the narrator for almost the entire book. Smithton had also created an alien species he named "Zayans", in memory of Zayack. Smithton's team is taken to space to find a way to eliminate the Creatures, but the military and World Alliance Intelligence army make things difficult.
All things considered, I'd say what I liked most about this book was the plot. I'd always been interested in science fiction, and I found the story quite intriguing. It had my attention right from the beginning. It had a good amount of action and suspense. And the characters were diverse, with a great antagonist. And I liked the writing too. Yandell seems to have done quite a bit of research in order to make the science relatively believable, and I enjoyed the detail put into describing the appearance of the Creatures and Zayans, including how they hunted, and communicated.
That said, Yandell could've paid more attention to what he wrote. It was written well, but I found a number of mistakes all throughout the book, though mostly at the beginning. It got better around the middle, but the errors were still very much present up until the end. Also, I don't believe the author actually explained some things. In case they may be considered spoilers, I won't be listing them. However, some could be solved with a sequel. I am unsure of Yandell's plans regarding a sequel though. My biggest question throughout the story was whether or not Walter Smithton was a "Reader". At first, it was implied that he wasn't but knew how to deal with them, but later, it was implied that he was, but it was never clearly pointed out. Hence my confusion.
All in all, I give this book a 2 out of 4 because it had quite a lot of errors and left something to be desired in each aspect. But I was still well entertained by the plot, and the characters.
I would recommend this to those who love science fiction stories, especially about aliens. And especially if you're not bothered by spelling and grammatical errors.
