[Following is a volunteer review of "The Watchmaker’s Doctor" by G. M. T. Schuilling.]
The Watchmaker’s Doctor by G. M. T. Schuilling is a fascinating novella. Anaya, the protagonist, has a challenging life when she suddenly dies in an accident. However, before her death, she is gifted a watch that allows her to rewind time. She can choose to go back to any specific time in her life. Anaya travels back through time and changes some of the decisions that led her to her untimely death, but there are some things that she cannot change, no matter how she tries.
I really liked this concept and the idea of reliving one’s life to make better choices than you did before. I thought the time travel concept was enthralling, and I wanted to keep reading more. I have not stopped thinking about the ending, and I cannot wait to read the next book. I also thought the author showed a deeper and more empathetic understanding of mental illnesses and their treatment than most books I have read. Overall, I would say that The Watchmaker’s Doctor was well-written and well-edited.
While I thought the author showed empathy for mental illnesses, the story referred to people who are Deaf as Deaf-Mutes. That has not been the appropriate terminology for a while, and even though I do not know the exact year the story takes place, it is inappropriate. I also found Anaya’s character to be whiny. Much of her narrative focuses on her complaining about her circumstances instead of being grateful for more time. Finally, if the plot included more time travel, I would have liked it more, but I guess I will have to wait and read the other books.
I would give The Watchmaker’s Doctor 3 out of 4 stars because I liked that the main character could relive parts of her life and make changes to the outcome. It was a good book that captured my attention, even though it was not very long. I would have enjoyed a full-length novel more, but I did find this story enjoyable.
I would recommend this novella to anyone who needs a fast read and is interested in time travel. If you are like me and are fascinated by the idea of reliving parts of your life and changing the outcome, I would definitely recommend The Watchmaker’s Doctor. Based on the initial story, I think this series might be worth reading and exploring further.
