Review of The Legacy of Job's Wife
The Bible story of Job is well known by most Christians and is often used as a teaching of the unshakable faith Job had in God and in turn, the favour God continuously bestowed on Job. As someone who was born and raised in a Christian household, I have always vilified Job’s wife and viewed her as one of the mediums the Devil used to tempt Job without stopping for a second to think of how all their misfortune must have left her feeling. The Legacy of Job’s Wife gives an interesting take on her perspective and humanizes her in such a way that my way of thinking has changed. While the book is fictional, it certainly made me sympathize with her and question myself about how I would have acted had I been in a similar situation.
Cynthia J. Koelker tells the story of Job’s wife in such a captivating and relatable way that I just found myself cruising through the pages, crying and even laughing at times. The Legacy of Job’s Wife expanded my thinking and definitely played on my empathy. It was interesting to see the character development in Ix’ises (Job’s wife) as well as seeing how devoted to each other they were. I would go as far as saying that this book was a beautiful story full of love, growth and pain. Above everything, this book was interesting from the first sentence up until the last. I did not have to force myself to keep going just because I had started the book but I was genuinely captivated. I will definitely be rereading The Legacy of Job's Wife after I read the chapter of Job from the Bible.
The only thing I could perceive as a negative in this book was that it was almost too perfect. The relationships some of the characters had with each other were not very relatable. For instance, the siblings never quarreled and where too understanding for their respective ages. It was almost unreal how some relationships and friendships formed but then again, Job was highly favoured by God so these things should really not be that surprising.
I would rate this book a 3 out of 4 because it encased all the things I love in a book. It was well written, captivating and told a beautiful story as well as relatable character growth.
I would recommend this book to any person who enjoys reading, Christian or not and of any age group. The book does not include explicit material or language.
While reading the book, I did not notice any grammar or spelling errors.
