What if one day you wake up to the murder of your dad, and that too with his blood on your mother’s hands?
Would you believe it? Would you expose her? Or would you put the blame on someone innocent?

Toxic Side Effect by Sandy Magner is a crime drama, a sequel to Pocket Dial. This 150-page fast-paced story runs with Jennifer Burns, the lead protagonist, who is out to find out the murderer of her father, Richard Burns.

The story starts with Jennifer finding out that someone poisoned her beloved father. The last person to see her father is her own mother. All the fingers are allegedly pointing in her direction. After tolerating her husband’s extramarital affair for the last thirty years, maybe she got fed up with the cruel lies and decided to put an end to it. She had the motive and the opportunity. Could she have done it? Jennifer naively thinks she knows her parents. Find out what happens when a well-kept family secret is disclosed. How will Jennifer expose the murderer? Will she ever be able to find them? Who had enough motive to commit this crime? Watch as Jennifer Burns go on a hunt to find her father’s murderer!

I think the author did a great job at making this book stand out as an independent novel, rather than just a sequel to her previous book. With limited pages, Magner provided a picturesque description of the events. The author provided rawness to the book by describing every emotion. One can clearly grasp what a character is experiencing at a certain point. The characters are well-built too, even the supporting characters are thoroughly enjoyable.

What I detested is how unrealistic the story is. Jennifer Burns being the daughter of the victim should have been a suspect too, but rather she was involved in the whole investigation. Sergeant Mike who was investigating the case was at times flirting with Jennifer and would call as early as before the sunrise, without any emergency. The book disappoints the genre lovers because of the lack of consciousness in dropping clues.

This book is a page-turner. But it fails at making the adrenaline rush through your veins, which doesn’t do justice to the genre lovers.

I rate this book two out of four stars as it was nice reading this, but I wouldn’t recommend this to my friends. The book looks professionally edited, as I was able to find only one mistake. But the cover of the book lacks any thoughts. It looks cheap quality, something that you wouldn’t pick on your own. I think the cover can improve considerably.

My rating is based on the points I have mentioned above, but if you’re looking for a fast-fun-read, then this is it. But if you’re into the suspense and the tension, it ain’t the book for you, buddy!
