Review of Steel Reign: Flight of The Starship Concord
Steel Reign is a tough bounty hunter who finds out his half-sister, Olia, is in danger. He makes it his mission to save her and faces treacherous challenges along the way.
Steel gets help in his mission from Gifford, a computer nerd, and others join them along the way; including Steel's ex-girlfriend. As well as having to deal with the challenges of earning credits and saving Olia, Steel has to deal with being infected by a deadly disease.
Steel Reign: Flight of The Starship Concord by Braxton Cosby was an enjoyable read. The world that the author created was captivating, and the different alien species were interesting. There was a lot of action and some tense moments. I liked how the relationship between Steel and his crew developed. There were also a few funny moments, like when Steel and Gifford first met, Steel wanted Gifford to call him daddy. My favourite characters were Gifford and Olia. I like Gifford because he was funny at times and very smart and patient. I like Olia because she was strong and had managed to look after herself when she was captured.
Although there are many positive aspects of this book, there were certain things I didn’t like. It took me a while to warm to Steel, as I wasn’t fond of him in the first few chapters. Cosby chose to substitute the word one for the number 1 in places, and I found this distracting. It took me out of the book at times, and I sometimes confused 1 for the letter I. It took me a while to get into the book because the first few chapters were slightly confusing. The chapters had time jumps, where it would be a few days earlier, and I prefer stories to be linear.
I didn’t particularly like how the women were sexualised, and Steel compared the women he’d slept with to his sister, which was off-putting. Lastly, I found substituted swear words like sheet and fook to be a bit immature, and using the word sheet led to confusion at times.
I would rate this 2 out of 4 stars because I liked the plot, action and world, but the main character wasn’t likeable enough for me. Unfortunately, I found more negative aspects to this book than positives. I’m unsure whether this book was professionally edited or not, as using 1 instead of one seemed like something an editor would change. Overall, this was a pretty good book, with an exciting premise, but not the best execution.
I would recommend this book to people who love sci-fi books and action. People who are interested in aliens and robots may enjoy the book because there was a range of different species, with different abilities.
