Review of Higher Ground
Cancer is a disease characterized by the uncontrollable division of cells leading to the destruction of body tissues. The advanced stages of cancer are irreversible. Therefore, patients undergo treatment to manage the disease.
Higher Ground by Sophia Edwards-Bennett MD PhD is a short book revolving around cancer. It is a bridge of understanding for patients and physicians, loved ones, and establishments. The author starts by defining success. While many people link success to commanding wealth, Edwards-Bennett, the oncologist, reckons that success is attained through fulfilling one’s purpose. She strives to provide a remedy that exceeds cancer antidote, which eliminates fears and anxieties from patients. She says that this contributes to her success. The Transformative Power of the Big-C (Cancer) Re-Attitudes is an approach to help patients cope with physiological toxicities and refining their emotional dexterity to forge mental fortitude. This treatment option is tailored to meet every patient’s needs. Therefore, the therapist must create a doctor-client relationship to inspire trust. The doctor then progresses to probing questions, such as what do you treasure most and the lessons that the patient teaches people they meet. The Re-Attitudes is an insightful approach that explores the patient’s admiration, purpose, mind, self-worth, identity, hope, and life.
I loved the poems incorporated in this book. ‘Restoration of Hope’ was my favorite. It acknowledges that the battle of hope is full of uncertainties. Despite the sorrows that befall our paths, we anticipate better times ahead. The use of figurative language is also evident. The author likens ‘a higher round’ to navigating the Blue Mountain in Jamaica. The summit is preceded by insurmountable challenges that seek to dismantle our resilience and instill doubt. Navigating through such a grueling path calls for patience, tenacity, and endurance. The same concept applies to cancer patients. I also appreciated that this book strives to promote the health of patients beyond recovery. This is because most treatment options focus on treating ailments only.
I disliked one thing in this book. It did not focus a lot of time and energy on the Re-Attitudes. I felt that besides the poems, the author should have provided more information about these strategies.
I, therefore, deduct a point based on the reason above and rate this book three out of four stars. It inspires hope among cancer patients, empowers caregivers, and informs readers about the effects of cancer on an individual.
I recommend this book to cancer patients and those seeking to bolster their understanding of the phenomenon. I believe it was edited by a professional because I noticed three minor punctuation errors that did not affect my reading experience.
